Samba Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities

Overview

Two buffer overflow vulnerabilities has been discovered in the samba package affecting the i Samba Web Administration Tool SWAT and ii the code used for supporting 'mangling method = hash' option.

Description

Samba is an open-source implementation of Microsoft's SMB/CIFS protocol for enabling file and printer sharing. It provides Microsoft file system services from UNIX file servers.

A vulnerability has been uncovered in the HTTP basic authentication implementation of Samba Web Administration Tool SWAT . a buffer overflow could be caused by an invalid base-64character when decoding base-64 data during HTTP basic authentication. This has the potential to allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the vulnerable machine remotely.

Another buffer overflow flaw has been uncovered in the code used to implement the 'mangling method = hash' option in smb.conf configuration file. This could possibly be exploited to cause a buffer overflow. However the default setting of this option is 'hash2' and hence the default installation is not affected by this vulnerability.

Solution

The vulnerabilities have been fixed in Samba version 3.0.5 while the second vulnerability has been fixed in Samba version 2.2.10. Users should update samba package as suggested by vendor.
