Command Injection Vulnerability in D-Link NAS

Overview

A vulnerability has been reported in a legacy D-Link NAS products, which could be exploited by a remote unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the targeted system.

Description

D-Link NAS (Network-Attached Storage) products are devices that provide centralized storage, file sharing, and data management over a network.

A vulnerability exits in D-Link NAS product in in the "account_mgr.cgi" file, when processing the "name" parameter within the "cgi_user_add" command. A remote, unauthenticated attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted HTTP GET request to the NAS device to execute arbitrary commands on the targeted system.

Solution

This vulnerability affects D-Link products at end-of-life (EOL) which no longer receive software updates, or security patches. Users are advised to replace these NAS devices with more secure and supported models to mitigate the risk of exploitation.

Workaround

D-Link advisory confirm that affected devices have reached end-of-life (EOL) status. Users are advised to replace these NAS devices with more secure and supported models to mitigate the risk of exploitation.

As an interim measure, the following are recommended:
  • Isolate Vulnerable NAS Devices: Disconnect the affected NAS devices from the public internet to avoid any external exploitation.
  • Restrict Access: Control access to the device by configuring firewall rules or network access controls that limit traffic to trusted internal networks only.
  • Update Access Credentials: Consistently update and enhance device passwords to prevent unauthorized access, and ensure wireless connections are encrypted.
