Microsoft Windows NT DHCP Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities could Allow Remote Code Execution and Denial of Service

    • Overview

    A vulnerability exists in Windows NT in the way it handles the request and logging process, which could cause denial of service of DHCP server and remote code execution.

    Impact

    Successful exploitation of the vulnerability allows execution of arbitrary code and Denial of service.

    Description

    Logging Vulnerability ( CAN-2004-0899   )

    This vulnerability is caused due to an unchecked buffer while handling the logging of certain value from specific network packets. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by creating a program and communicate with the vulnerable DHCP server via sending a specially crafted DHCP message. These specially crafted messages could cause DHCP to stop responding to all requests.

    DHCP Request Vulnerability ( CAN-2004-0900   )

    This vulnerability is caused due to an unchecked buffer in the handling of DHCP request traffic. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by creating a program and communicate with the vulnerable DHCP server via sending a specially crafted DHCP message. These specially crafted messages could cause a buffer overflow and allow an attacker to execute the arbitrary code.

    Workaround

  • Disable DHCP Logging
  • Block UDP port 67 and UDP port 68 at your firewall

    Apply appropriate patches as mentioned in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-042
