Vulnerability in Telnet Client Could Allow Information Disclosure

Overview

A vulnerability in Microsoft Telnet client application may allow a remote attacker to read client's session variables.

Impact

A malicious attacker may exploit this vulnerability to gain target system information. The target system's information could help attacker to launch more effective attacks.

Description

Microsoft Telnet client is vulnerable to information disclosure vulnerability. The vulnerability exists in handling of NEW-ENVIRON command. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by tricking user to connect his malicious Telnet server. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability requires persuading users to visit link hosting malicious Telnet server.

This could be accomplished by sending HTML rendered emails or webpage having TELNET:// URI handler.

Workaround

Un-register the default Telnet client

Solution

Apply the appropriate patches as mentioned in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-033
