Snort Back Orifice Pre-Processor Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

    • Overview

    A buffer overflow vulnerability has been identified in Snort, which could be exploited by remote attackers to execute arbitrary code.

    Description

    Snort is an open source network intrusion detection system. It has been observed that Snort version 2.4.0 and Higher are vulnerable to a stack overflow in Back Orifice pre-processor.

    This can be exploited by sending a maliciously crafted UDP packet to a system running Snort allowing remote unauthenticated attackers to compromise a vulnerable system.

    Workaround

    Disable Snort Back Orifice pre-processor as suggested below

    1 In snort.conf locate the line "preprocessor bo"
    2 Comment out the above line preceding it with a # mark
    3 Save the file and restart Snort

    Solution

    Upgrade to Snort version 2.4.3
