Cisco IOS System Timers Heap based buffer overflow vulnerability

    • Overview

    A vulnerability has been identified in Cisco Internetwork Operating System IOS , which could be exploited by remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands or cause a denial of service

    Description

    It is observed that devices running Cisco IOS may be vulnerable to remote code execution after exploitation of attack vectors like heap based buffer overflows. The flaw is due to an error in Cisco IOS internal system timers which may execute arbitrary code from portions of memory that have been overwritten via exploitation. Successful exploitation may yield arbitrary code execution.

    Note: Cisco reported that the vulnerability is a result of continued research related to the IPv6 vulnerability released in July 2005
