Overview
A vulnerability has been reported in Microsoft Internet Explorer in the way it handles createTextRange DHTML method which could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the affected system.
Description
The TextRange object represents text in an HTML element. createTextRange is a DHTML method which creates a TextRange object for the element.
This vulnerability is caused due to memory corruption error when IE calls "createTextRange " method for certain HTML/DHTML objects such as radio button control or "checkbox" object. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability creating a specially crafted web page and convincing a user to visit the same. Successful exploitation allows a remote attacker to compromise the affected system and execute arbitrary commands.
Workaround
Disable active scripting or configure Internet Explorer to prompt before running Active Scripting. For details refer to Microsoft Security Advisory 917077 Exercise caution while visiting untrusted websites
Solution
Apply appropriate patch as mentioned in MS security Bulletin MS06-013
