Overview
A vulnerability has been reported in Microsoft Word that could be exploited by an attacker to take complete control of the system.
Description
The vulnerability is caused due to an error while handling Microsoft Word documents. Successful exploitation corrupts system memory to allow execution of arbitrary code with the privileges of logged on user.
The attacker could exploit this vulnerability by creating specially crafted word file. An attacker could host a website containing the word file and then persuade a user to visit the website typically by getting them click on to the link to the website or could send the word file as an email attachment. Opening such file corrupts system memory to allow execution of arbitrary code.
Workaround
Do not open or save Microsoft Office files that received from untrusted sources or that received unexpectedly from trusted sources.
Install Microsoft Office Isolated Conversion Environment MOICE on PCs running Microsoft Office applications. This will facilitate isolation of malicious MS Office documents and prevent execution of malicious code embedded in these documents.
