Microsoft License Logging Server Heap Overflow Vulnerability

Overview

A Vulnerability has been reported in Microsoft License Logging Server, which could allow an unauthenticated remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on system running vulnerable License Logging Service and to take complete control of the vulnerable system.

Description

The License Logging Service is a tool, designed to help customers to manage licenses for the Microsoft server products that are licensed in the Server Client Access License CAL model.

This vulnerability is caused due to improper validation of the length of strings passed to the License Logging Server. An unauthenticated remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending specially crafted malformed RPC call to an affected system. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow remote attacker to cause a heap-based buffer overflow resulting execution of arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges on the system running vulnerable License Logging Service.

Workaround

  • Disable the License Logging service
  • Block TCP ports 139 and 445 at the firewall

Apply appropriate patches as mentioned in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS09-064
