Overview

A buffer overflow vulnerability has been reported in an ActiveX control in multiple Symantec Altiris console utilities which leads to unauthorized system information disclosure, information corruption, or may execute arbitrary code onto the user's system in the context of the user's browser.

Description

A vulnerability has been reported in an ActiveX control AeXNSConsoleUtilities.dll exists in Symantec Altiris ConsoleUtilities which fails to properly validate /filter external inputs.

An attacker can exploit this vulnerability persuading a victim to visit a specially-crafted Web page that passes an overly long string to the second argument of the RunCmd method, a remote attacker could overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system with the privileges of the victim or cause the victims browser to crash. Failed attacks can cause a denial of service condition.
