Microsoft Office Project Remote Code Execution Vulnerability

Overview

A vulnerability has been reported in Microsoft Office Project while handling project files. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow an attacker to execute an arbitrary code and take complete control of the affected system in the context of logged in user.

Description

A remote code execution vulnerability exists in the Microsoft Office Project "winproj.exe" while handling project files.

An attacker could exploit the vulnerability by constructing a specially crafted document with a list structure with a malformed element field, that when processed, will result in memory corruption and could allow remote attacker to crash or can take control of the affected system in context of logged in user.

Workaround

  • Do not open Project files such as files with a .mpp extension that receive from untrusted sources

Solution

Apply appropriate updates as mentioned in the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS09-074
