Microsoft Windows WordPad Text Converter Word 97 File Parsing Memory Corruption Vulnerability

Overview

A remote memory-corruption vulnerability has been reported in Microsoft WordPad Text Converter when handling a Word 97 file that could allow an unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the logged in user.

Description

WordPad is a default component of Microsoft Windows operating systems. Text converters in WordPad allow users who do not have Microsoft Word installed to open documents in Microsoft Windows Write (.wri) and Microsoft Word (.doc) file formats.

A vulnerability has been reported in Microsoft WordPad Text Converter which is caused when handling a specially crafted Word 97 file containing malicious fields that results in memory corruption.

An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the logged on user.



Workaround

  • Affected Systems should be configured to disable the WordPad Word 97 text converter by restricting access to the converter file
