Overview

Multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in the Microsoft Publisher,  which could be exploited by remote attackers to execute arbitrary code to take control of the affected system in the context of the currently logged-in user.

Description

Multiple vulnerabilities in Microsoft Publisher are caused by errors related to Function Pointer Overwrite, Out-of-bounds, Invalid Pointer and Memory Corruption.  These vulnerabilities could be exploited by remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by tricking a user into opening a specially crafted Publisher.

Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow the remote attacker to execute arbitrary code to take control of the affected in the context of currently logged-in user.

Workaround

  • Do not open Office files that you receive from untrusted sources or that you receive unexpectedly from trusted sources

Solution

Apply appropriate patches as mentioned in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS11-091
