CERT-In Vulnerability Note
CIVN-2013-0200
Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office
Original Issue Date:November 13, 2013
Severity Rating: HIGH
Systems Affected
- Microsoft Office 2003 SP 3
- Microsoft Office 2007 SP 3
- Microsoft Office 2010 SP 1 (32-bit editions & 64-bit editions)
- Microsoft Office 2010 SP 2 (32-bit editions & 64-bit editions)
- Microsoft Office 2013 (32-bit editions & 64-bit editions)
- Microsoft Office 2013 RT
Overview
Multiple remote code execution vulnerabilities have been reported in Microsoft Office which could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the targeted system in context of the logged in user.
Description
These vulnerabilities exist in Microsoft Office due to improper accessing of memory objects while parsing WordPerfect (.wpd) files. An unauthenticated, remote attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by convincing a user to open a crafted WordPerfect file.
Successful exploitation could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system with privileges of the logged in user.
Workaround
- Restrict access to the affected WordPerfect file converters (wpft632.cnv and wpft532.cnv)
- Do not open WordPerfect document files that are received from untrusted sources or that are received unexpectedly from trusted sources.
Solution
Apply appropriate patches as mentioned in Microsoft Security Bulletin
