Multiple Vulnerabilities in ABB GATE

Overview

Multiple vulnerabilities exist in ABB GATE, which could exploited by a remote attacker to make the system inaccessible or execute cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks on the affected system.

Description

1. Authentication bypass vulnerability ( CVE-2018-18995   )

The vulnerability exists because the devices do not allow authentication to be configured on administrative web interfaces. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to make the product inaccessible by changing product configuration or continuously resetting the product.

2. XSS vulnerability ( CVE-2018-18997   )

The vulnerability exists due to insufficient sanitization of user-supplied data. An unauthenticated, remote attacker using administrative web interface could exploit this vulnerability by injecting malicious scripts into affected products web pages.
Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow the attacker to inject client-side scripts into the product¿s web pages and display/execute the payload in a visitor browser.

Workaround

Both GATE-E1 & GATE-E2 have reached end of life (EOL), hence no updated firmware available. ABB recommends implementing defense-in-depth principles to minimize vulnerabilities exploitation risk. 

  • Separate control system networks from other networks using firewall and managed switches that have minimal number of ports exposed. 
  • Physically protect control system from unauthorized personnel.
  • Portable computers and removable storage should be scanned for viruses before connected to control system.
