Overview

Multiple vulnerabilities have been identified in GitHub Enterprise Server (GHES) that may allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code, perform cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks, or gain unauthorized access to private repositories.

Target Audience:
Users of affected GitHub Enterprise Server (GHES).

Risk Assessment:
High risk of remote code execution.

Impact Assessment:
Potential for sensitive information disclosure, privilege escalation and system compromise.

Description

GitHub Enterprise Server (GHES) is a self-hosted version of GitHub designed for enterprises to securely manage, develop, and collaborate on code within their own infrastructure.

These vulnerabilities  exist due to improper authorization handling, insecure input sanitization, and unsafe configurations during hot patching. Specifically, these include a missing authorization check that may permit unauthorized access to private repositories, a flaw in the Markdown rendering engine that can lead to stored cross-site scripting (XSS), and unsafe handling of dynamically allocated ports during hot patch upgrades that could be exploited for remote code execution.

Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities may allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code, perform cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks, or gain unauthorized access to private repositories.

Solution

Users are advised to upgrade to the following versions or later as per GitHub Advisory
  • GHES 3.13.14
  • GHES 3.14.11
  • GHES 3.15.6
  • GHES 3.16.2
